Exercise 1
matchingI→amyou→arehe / she / it→iswe / they→are
Only one pronoun uses 'am' (I). Three use 'is' (he/she/it). Three use 'are' (you/we/they).
🇧🇷 Memorize: só 'I' usa 'am'. Só 'he', 'she', 'it' usam 'is'. Todos os outros usam 'are'.
Exercise 2
fill blankComplete: 'She ___ my sister.'
SHE → IS. Remember: he/she/it all use 'is'.
🇧🇷 'She' pede 'is'.
Exercise 3
fill blankComplete: 'We ___ from Brazil.'
WE → ARE. Same as you and they.
🇧🇷 'We' pede 'are'.
Exercise 4
multiple choiceWhich is the contraction of 'I am'?
- I's
- I'manswer
- Im
- I're
'I am' → 'I'm'. Natives almost always contract. 'Im' without the apostrophe is a spelling mistake.
🇧🇷 I am = I'm. A forma contraída é muito mais natural na fala.
Exercise 5
multiple choiceIn English, how do you say 'I'm hungry' (fome)?
- I have hunger
- I am hunger
- I am hungryanswer
- I have hungry
English uses BE + adjective: 'I am hungry/tired/cold/thirsty'. Not 'I have hunger' (Portuguese structure).
🇧🇷 Em inglês usamos 'to be' + adjetivo, não 'to have' + substantivo: I AM hungry (não 'I have hunger').
Exercise 6
fill blankQuestion form: '___ you a student?'
Yes/no questions with BE start with the verb: Are you…? Is she…? Am I…?
🇧🇷 Para fazer pergunta com 'to be', inverta: 'You are' → 'Are you?'
Exercise 7
multiple choiceWhich negative is correct?
- He no is tired
- He don't is tired
- He isn't tiredanswer
- He not is tired
Negatives with BE just add 'not' (or contract to n't): is + not = isn't, are + not = aren't, am + not = 'm not.
🇧🇷 Negativa do 'to be': is/are + not. 'Isn't' e 'aren't' são as contrações.
Exercise 8
fill blankComplete: 'It ___ cold today.' (right now)
IT is the pronoun for weather, time, and unnamed things. 'It is cold' / 'It's cold'.
🇧🇷 Em inglês, 'it' é o pronome para tempo, clima e objetos genéricos.
